10 Reasons to Choose the School for Advanced Studies

From the moment the first students entered our classrooms, we’ve delivered a genuinely unique school experience that goes beyond standard academics. What makes us unique? We provide students in Rogers, AR with academic freedom, a college-level curriculum, and expert mentorship to name a few. Here’s a look at what makes the School for Advanced Studies (SAS) one of Arkansas’s highest-rated schools.

1. 30%+ Above State Average in Core Subjects

The proof is in the results. SAS is proud to be one of Arkansas’ top-rated schools. We have an “A” rating from the Arkansas Department of Education, and we were recognized by the Office of Education Policy at the University of Arkansas for high academic growth.

In the last year, students exceeded expectations in state assessments. SAS students scored over 30% higher in English language arts, math, and science over the state average. Results like this show what’s possible when parents and educators invest in the success of future generations.

2. Academic Pathways Drive Student Learning

So how do we get there? One of the best ways to keep students engaged and instill a genuine love of learning is by giving them a level of control over the curriculum.

All students at SAS choose between three distinct academic pathways: Fine Arts, Humanities, or Math and Science. Each comes with their own specialized coursework and projects, so students can tailor their education to their favorite subjects and develop advanced skills toward their ideal career.

Giving students this level of choice empowers them to take control of their educational journey. Once in the driver’s seat, students build more confidence and self-esteem—traits that they carry with them through college and beyond.

3. A College-Level Great Books Curriculum

Some books endure because their messages still resonate and keep us reflecting on the world around us. That’s why our curriculum highlights the world’s most prolific books, essays, and texts which encourage deep thinking among students.

Students discuss these revered texts in Socratic seminars, where they explore new concepts creatively. The list of great books covers the gamut of subjects from popular literature to extensive scientific textbooks. Students enter higher education, having fully explored college-level texts other students have yet to be introduced to.

4. Socratic Seminars Build College-Ready Thinking

Reading great texts is only half the equation. Socratic seminars are college-level discussions where students work through complex topics through meaningful discussion.

Each seminar takes place once a month and varies in size, from small class discussions to large conversations where the whole school participates. Each seminar is led by a teacher; however, students guide the discussion where they articulate ideas, actively listen, engage respectfully, and build upon each other’s insights.

These seminars help students think critically and produce creative solutions to current problems, which are key skills needed to succeed at the world’s top colleges.

5. Personalized Mentorship Through Advisory Groups

Teachers and students at SAS work together to build a school community of shared success. Advisory Groups are a special class session where students from grades 5-11 participate in Seminar prep overseen by a teacher.

In these classes, middle school and high school students provide incredible support for younger students, helping them develop Seminar talking points and public speaking skills. In return, these student mentors learn valuable leadership skills and will enter the workforce as true global citizens.

6. Expert College Counseling Starting in 9th Grade

At SAS, college preparation starts long before senior year. Navigating college enrollment is just as important as grades if you’re looking to get into a top university.

Experienced college counselors start working with students as early as grade 9, helping them choose courses and extracurriculars that align with their future goals. By senior year, they will meet one-on-one with students to provide a roadmap to their dream university. provide a roadmap to their dream university.

From navigating the application process to securing financial aid, counselors ensure a great education goes rewarded.

7. Parents Help Strengthen School Community

Parents play an important part in the school culture as well. Parent booster programs support school initiatives, fosters community involvement, and strengthen the connection between families and the school.

SAS parents show up in meaningful ways throughout the year by organizing teacher appreciation events that celebrate our faculty and running fundraisers that directly support student programs. The SAS community goes above and beyond for its students.

8. Hands-On Programs in Coding, Art, and Conservation

Beyond the classroom, students join a range of featured programs led by local community organizations where they receive hands-on experience in coding, art, and environmental outreach.

The School of Conservation Leadership Program is where students explore Arkansas’s natural resources and learn new ways to help conserve the state’s natural beauty.

The EAST Workshop empowers students within the global workforce by teaching them to master cutting-edge tools and enterprise-level software, from 3D printing and VR to Adobe Creative Suite and AutoCAD.

Finally, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art Partnership is a two-year program where museum educators visit the school and work directly with creatively minded students. Together, they collaborate to create public art pieces that will be displayed throughout the North Arkansas community.

9. Extracurriculars for Every Interest

Of course, school is about more than academics. Extracurricular clubs and sports teams allow students to explore new hobbies and connect with their fellow classmates. The campus provides a club or sport for just about every interest.

Storytellers and performers can weave exciting tales or perform in front of a live audience in writing or drama clubs.

Students looking to make a difference in their community can join student government, community service club, or debate club.

STEM-focused learners can join science and math clubs.

And athletes of all ages can challenge themselves in volleyball, golf, or basketball.

There are plenty more extracurricular clubs and sports to choose from.

10. Learning Inside a Historic 1928 Landmark

And finally, there’s the building itself. Each school day, students walk in halls full of history that echo the memories of profound visitors. SAS is located within the beautifully restored Lane Hotel. This monumental building was built in 1928 and was the premier destination for social gatherings throughout the early 1900s.

Several famous visitors stayed at the Lane Hotel during its heyday, including famed aviator Amelia Earhart, pro boxer Jack Dempsey, and legendary actors Errol Flynn and Henry Fonda.
